Have been using Jenkins for years but this book is an easy read and really helps to illustrate how you can get a little bit more out of the platform. Not much detail on the operations and maintenance ( that I've seen yet ) but as a user/consumer of the software it is extremely helpful. I do believe that there should be a 'sister book' or maybe a few chapters added for the operations perspective to deal with system logging, troubleshooting and maybe a bit of architectural design theory on how to deal with different types of Jenkins Infrastructure models.
This is the best Jenkins book I have ever read. I am an experienced Jenkins 2 Pipeline user and still found the book is helpful. I got some tricks and reminders from the book on improving my existing pipelines.
I was supposed to get this on Monday. When I got the notice it was coming today I was overjoyed, until I opened it and saw that 85% of the screen shots are unreadable.This is by far the worst print job I have ever seen, and for it to be coming from O'reilly with such an important book blew me away.I have attached pictures to show you what I am talking about.I know the content of this book will be great but the frustration of not being able to see the screenshots has it going straight to my back up books on the topic. I planned on reading this cover to cover, not anymore.I feel so bad for the author. I am sorry. If O'reilly does a reprint, which I think they will have to do, I will come back and update this.
Whether you have earned your stripes as a Hudson Administrator, or are new to the Jenkins realm, this book is an incredibly valuable addition to your collection. The future of Jenkins is all about Declarative Pipeline. The author does an excellent job of explaining the concepts in-depth, whether you come to the table with very little Groovy knowledge and/or are new to the concept of pipelines-as-code.Very often, newcomers to the Jenkins space get pigeon-holed into archaic methods of project builds. I'll agree that tried and trued methods should not be shunned away lightly, but how does your project scale? How do you onboard three new teams of developers and 30 new repositories into your lifecycle? Now you've got 500 build jobs with different plug-in dependencies, Java versions, OS dependencies....the nightmare begins!! This book should be a pre-requisite for anyone starting the journey! It does a great job of piecing the architecture together in a manner that allows the reader to step back and look at an automation solution as a whole.Focus time into pipeline-as-code methodology, explore the JenkinsFile concepts and work smarter, not harder! I should expect most would embrace this revolutionary concept in todays 80 hour work-week.The unfortunate downside to this publishing are the smattering of low-resolution images throughout the book. I'd say it is about 50/50 but they are really there are reference points to what is being discussed in the text. I don't find it to be a deal-breaker for me when going through the book. I found there are very few things you wouldn't be able to accomplish with the examples Brent has provided here.If you've read Jenkins: The Definitive Guide, you'll know the content there is 7+ years old and mostly deprecated. Jenkins 2: Up and Running covers concepts that are hot off the presses, and gives you a great starting point to start your journey with CI/CD Automation and Jenkins!
There are so many things this book does well! I am still a beginner when it comes to executing pipelines in Jenkins, so having this comprehensive resource is beyond helpful. Beyond just being a technical resource, the book does a great job in the beginning explaining the history and evolution of Jenkins and how/why Jenkins 2 is different. I am still wrapping my head around how Freestyle is different from Pipeline is different from Declarative and the advantages/disadvantages to each method, so I benefited greatly from Laster's background and examples of all each of these. While Laster says the book may not be the type of book you want to read from start to finish, but rather used as a reference, I am finding it incredibly readable. It has already improved my knowledge of Jenkins and I know it will continue to be a primary resource as I work to improve my abilities.I agree with the one reviewer who mentioned that the screenshots are difficult to see due to low contrast, but I haven't found that to interfere too much with my ability to consumer the information presented. If you are a Jenkins user in any way, or are wondering what Jenkins has the ability to do to see how it might be able to help you automate your software delivery process, I highly recommend this book.
I have to admit that most of the information I get usually comes through the usual outlets: stack overflow, Reddit, and others. But I've realized that having a comprehensive resource is far better than hunting and pecking for scattered answers across the web. I'm so glad I got this book!
I had this book on my wishlist, then I heard the author on an episode of software engineering radio. I was floored at his complete lack of knowledge, I found my self screaming at the radio. How can you write a book on Jenkins and not be able to answer what language it's written in. The answer is JAVA.
Just got this book a few days ago, excited to dive into Jenkins. Unfortunately all of the screen shots aren't readable. Too small, fuzzy, and distorted. Will be looking to return it or receive an improved copy.
