After 3 years of marriage to Alfie, Claire wanted to start a family. What she didn't know was that her husband had had a vasectomy. He had no intention of having children. They were the last thing he wanted. He'd had it done a year after they married, when she started talking about having kids. He didn't want her to find out. But, when she went to see a fertility specialist & discovered that there was no problem with her fertility, the doctor suggested that she should ask her husband to come in & have his sperm tested. Thinking Alfie would be on board, she scheduled an appointment for him to see the doctor. Uh, oh! The doctor would see his vasectomy scar & he would be screwed.Claire lost her mum, when she was a teen. After her mum died, her dad spoiled her with extravagant gifts; a house, expensive vacations & a Range Rover. Alfie fell in love with the life she offered him. It was a life he could get no other way. He was a master opportunist. Her money changed everything. People looked at him differently, saw success, gave him respect. Before he met Claire, he drifted from job to job & from town to town, getting by on the proceeds from petty crime & the occasional more serious infraction. For a while, he stole from blind people who were easy to mug.He underestimated just how much he would grow to hate Claire. Since the day he met her, he'd found Claire irritating but he'd assumed he could put up with it. The irritation had become dislike & the dislike had become hatred. When he was with her, he would pretend to be a loyal, faithful husband. And, when she wasn't around, he was up to no good.He established a fake email address, a fake identity & a fake profile and went on hook-up websites looking for casual sexual partners. He had an affair with a woman who found out his true identity so he strangled her & threw her body in an abandoned quarry, full of water & very deep. He planned to do the same to Claire. But, things didn't go as planned.Claire realized the man she loved had been lying to her. She had been so totally fooled. The humiliation, the disbelief - she felt nothing but rage. She found out that her husband had been cheating on her & that he had killed one of the women he'd been sleeping with. He'd been lying to her, since the day they met. Their marriage was a sham. But, in the end, she beat him at his own game & walked away free to have the life she wanted.

The beginning of "The Last Lie" wasn't too bad; I hoped for a compelling read. I'd read the rest of this author's work before and found the novels entertaining. However, the premise for this novel is so dopey, the plot falls apart almost immediately. The protagonist, Claire, loves her husband, Alfie, with mooning, reckless, wholehearted abandon. The first thing we learn about Alfie is that he hates Claire with a snarling, bitter passion. How on earth do these things reconcile? Ah...but Claire is rich! Alfie is from the proverbial "wrong side of the tracks", and, having met Claire several years ago when he was a temporary member of a band, decided that he was going to marry into the good life, and obtain the money, power, and nice things necessary for a comfortable existence. However, despite presently having these goodies showered upon him due to a wealthy father-in-law, Alfie chafes at the restrictions his social obligations and marriage now weigh upon him. Alfie would much prefer the wealth unencumbered with wife and family and obligations. And now Claire wants a baby, and unfortunately, Alfie has NEVER, EVER wanted children, and made sure of it with a vasectomy several years before. This sets in motion a series of consequential events in our plot.SPOILERS!These characters were all shallow stereotypes, and I never felt any passing feelings for any of them. Claire's father, a wealthy self-made man, has always disliked Alfie (as it turns out, for good reason!). Wouldn't he have had an investigator check into Alfie's past? Just a cursory investigation would have disclosed a series of terrible red flags, petty crime, thievery, embezzlement, and character flaws. I mean, just the most basic of checks would have turned up the parents that he claimed were dead!--as well as several several arrests! Enough to throw up serious doubts about Alfie, anyway! And the minute Claire goes missing, why doesn't Mitch keep the investigator on the case? Anyone with half a brain could figure out that something is seriously wrong with Alfie. And Mitch, the loving father, immediately turning on his daughter after assuming that SHE is the one having affairs? Er...not sure I believe that one. I think he would assume that Alfie is to blame for something. And Claire. After finding out that Alfie is cheating, lying, and, by the way, a MURDERER--she tries to figure out an idiotic revenge plan? She doesn't just...I don't know...go to the police?? Nothing in the plot has ever given us a hint that she's deranged or unhinged (as a matter of fact, SEVERAL times in the plot, the author mentions that Claire is a savvy, clear-minded business-woman), and she naturally does something completely stupid off-the-rails. Completely unsympathetic.Alfie: sociopath, plain and simple. And remarkably stupid. He thinks he's smart, but if he's that smart, why are all of his lies so easy to figure out? I would think that anyone who is trying to hide who he really is, and where he came from might be a little savvier when it comes to pictures of himself in public, how he frames his parents and their "deaths", his hometown, people he knew, etc. Once Claire went looking, everything unraveled quickly.Anyway, the writing was clear and concise. The book was easy to read and get through. Just very disappointed in the plot holes and flat characters. No surprises here. You will see everything coming from miles away.

I really liked this book! It kept my interest from start to finish! It's set in present day England featuring a wealthy young woman who becomes the target of a shady, penniless charlatan who despises anyone who is rich or successful. They meet at a wedding where she's a guest and he's a last-minute substitute musician in a no longer popular band. He decides to become the man he thinks will make her fall in love by appearing non-threatening, kind, charming, honest, etc. so she'll let down her guard, and give him the life he thinks he deserves. Then he adopts the mannerisms and style of her friends to fit into their world. He loves the fancy holidays, nice cars, nice house, and money her rich father freely gives her, but soon grows to despise and then hate his wife - not because of anything she's done but because he's bored and feels trapped. He doesn't like playing the easy-going, charming, loving and attentive husband in their "perfect" marriage. So he sets a plan in motion. But who has the last laugh? There were a few things I was left wondering about at the end - Why did she lie when she didn't need to? Why didn't the security guards join in with the cops? How did a single person manage to haul an unconscious person up a set of stairs and secure them? What did her father think of how things played out? Was he aware of what was really going on? Was there a divorce? There were a handful of minor characters who were never fleshed out, making me wonder why they were even mentioned. But I really enjoyed the story. It wasn't obvious it had been written by a man because it did such a good job describing things from a woman's point of view when necessary. I'll definitely read more books by this author.
