Brown would take a large paper map, cut out the city center, folded it up and slip it into his pocket, thus preventing him from looking like a tourist in areas where discretion is the better part of travel. This was his tool for surviving.After many years on the road, Brown settled back in New York and decided to start his own business, based on the adaptations he had made to maps in his travels. His goal was to give someone the ability to navigate easily in unfamiliar terrain.He started with a new map format: the accordion fold. Such a simple idea, but at the time it was revolutionary. Brown sold the maps during the day, zipping around Manhattan making deliveries on his Harley Davidson. At night he packed the orders and did the design work. I live near Boston, and I use this everytime I go into the city. I love that it's laminated, small enough to fit in my (medium-sized) purse, tells me where the nearest T (subway) stop is to where I want to go, and gives the major landmarks I'd want to visit. It also has every street I've ever looked for, even the small ones where I'm just visiting an apartment. And it has the entire subway map, so I can refer to it instead of hunting for one of the maps on the wall in the subway station. I only wish it covered more area; it only covers part of Cambridge and part of Boston, not enough to get to Porter Square in Cambridge, or south Boston, or as west as the Longwood Medical Center. It would be hard to fit more in this size, though. I've bought new versions of this as they've come out, and I give them to all my out-of-town guests.
Along with a travel guide, I wanted an easy to read map with good detail and important landmarks. These Streetwise maps are great! They have easy to read navigation (street names, etc.) and enough interesting detail (points of interest, etc.) to make them worth carrying around at all times. The transportation maps are handy as well (I would say essential) for navigating the city. Getting stuck at South Station and having to find a non-taxi way to get to North Station showed how good this map was for quickly navigating the city (sure, they're not far apart, but this beats asking every 3rd person for the next stretch of instructions!)It's durable and fits in a backpack, camera bag or most purses. For both this and our New York City trips - we found how essential they are.
Used this for a recent trip to Boston along with Frommer's Boston Day by Day book. Together they were so helpful. I took a wet erase marker with me to use on this laminated map to help map routes, circle areas of interest, etc. While the Frommer's book includes a transit map that I used frequently, I used this map for the fine details to help me get where I wanted to go. The next time I travel to a big city I will definitely use a Streetwise map in combination with a travel book.
The Streetwise maps are always accurate, dependable and detailed city maps. If you want to know exactly what your city looks like their products are excellent. This one of the complicated streets of Boston continues that impression. I found it quite useful andI will recommend it to others.
Anyone who's ever been to Boston knows how easy it is to get turned around and completely lost in a matter of 2 blocks just because there's no rhyme or reason to the city's layout, especially in the Back Bay, North End, and Financial District. This is a great little map that's very legible, clear, and reasonably sized. It's laminated, so if you stuff it into a bag with a camera, your lunch, and a sweatshirt it won't crumple like the directions you printed off Google maps :) I'd say it's a must-have if you're not traveling with a smart phone or data plan, and a nice-to-have for everyone else!
My favorite maps for any new place I visit, especially if I plan to use the subway.I have used Streetwise maps for New York City, DC, London and now Boston. Allhave been very helpful. I like the size and how easily they fold and unfold. Folded inhalf, it fits easily in purse or pocket.
I just bought this and must return it because it is dated as of 1997 and missing MBTA and subway stops. It is not revised as of 2014 as indicated in the product description.
This map is fantastic. Very detailed and easy to use. The lamination did pull apart a little after getting soaked in a storm. Another tourist asked us where we got the map, I think she had a little map envy.
