"In order to gain something, you have to lose something."Ok, kids, I have saved you from having to read this book, because that line pretty much sums up the entire text. This is the second time in short order that a Japanese language book about a young, lonely man facing who faces his mortality and looks back at his life through the context of beloved pet cats. The other is "The Traveling Cat Chronicles," by Hiro Arikawa and the two books are similar to the point that there's no need to read both, unless you're in need another moral story. One of the problems with this book is that its message isn't compelling and there is little else offered. The characters are blah. One of the reasons I keep picking up these books is because I can't resist a good cat story, but I didn't like or care about Cabbage. The ending is also pretty unsatisfying. All in all, this is a short, parable-like book that falls flat and isn't really worth reading.

I had such high hopes for this book!!! When I read the plot, I immediately thought of movie The Butterfly Affect and thought this book would explore and go into great detail about what the world would be like with various things suddenly disappearing. If that’s what you’re expecting, you’re going to be disappointed. Whenever something is removed from the world, it barely changes anything. Instead this book is mostly about a son who struggles with his relationship with his father.

If Cats Disappeared From The World by Genki Kawamura (excellently translated by Eric Selland) – amusing, sad and thought-provoking novel set in Japan. If Cats Disappeared From The World is the story of the last week in the life of the narrator, an unnamed 30 year old Japanese postman diagnosed with a brain tumour and told by his doctor he is going to die.He goes back in shock to his tiny apartment and to his cat Cabbage, with whom he shares his life. And then the Devil appears – looking a lot like the narrator himself, but very brash and dressed in an Hawaiian shirt. He offers him a deal. He can live an extra day each time he asks the Devil to remove an item from the world – the items, of course, to be chosen by the Devil. But, as the story progresses, we realise that all the items are chosen to represent something significant in our narrator’s life. Is the Devil the alter ego of our narrator? Is the narrator trying to explain and atone for past mistakes? The first item is mobile phones. The story debates the advantages of a peaceful world without the intrusion of constant communication, set against the obvious convenience that a connected world brings – and it appears our narrator had a long-standing romance that was conducted very largely by phone. He and his girlfriend came back from vacation on a long-haul plane and had nothing to say to each other… until they got back and could again pick up their phones. The second item is movies – and our narrator is a movie buff and his girlfriend (the same one) works as a projectionist in a local movie theatre. The removal of movies will destroy a large part of their lives. And the third is clocks – our narrator’s father, from whom he is estranged, is a clock repairer and his work will be destroyed. Each of the three episodes is told with humour and understanding – despite the consequences of what is being done and the impact it will have on our narrator’s life going forward. Then the Devil decides that cats will be next on the list of items to disappear. And this poses a real dilemma for our narrator. Does he condemn his only real friend, Cabbage, to vanish for ever? What would his life be like without him? But, if he were to refuse and spare Cabbage, then who would look after the cat after his death? If Cats Disappeared From The World is not a long read (less than 200 pages). It is a very Japanese book, but one that I’m sure will now find success in translation outside its home market (where, incidentally, it has sold over one million copies…)

What a delightful read this was. Funny and sad, poignant and, at times, a little bit on the bonkers side. Yes, it has a message but that message will be different for everyone depending on their own life's experiences. I have spoken to a couple of people who have also read this book and we have taken some quite different things from it.Our hero has been feeling off colour for a while now so he bites the bullet and visits the doctor. There he is told some devastating, life changing news. Now facing only a short time to live he looks at his life and starts to make a list. This doesn't go well and then he has a visitor. The devil appears and offers him a bit of a Faustian deal. If he chooses something to disappear from the world he can have an extra day to live. Now, this may sound easy, especially when you also factor in the fact that you won't be there for the fallout but initially he struggles and the devil has to assist. At this point, I was reminded by the Talking Heads song, Nothing But Flowers which basically talks about the modern world's devolution to a more natural state. As our narrator starts to disappear things, he also think back on his life and, as more things go from the world, he leads himself to realise what he really needs to do before he dies.OK, so I admit it, I was drawn to this book first by the title and then by the fact that the cat in the book was called Cabbage. Yes, I can be that shallow! But I am so glad I did as this book pretty much hit my every emotion as it meandered along. It had me chuckling, laughing, sobbing and, and I'm not ashamed to admit it, crying big ugly tears. It also made me think; a lot.It was a relatively short read for me but it wasn't without substance. There were very few wasted words and definitely no superfluous waffle or padding. It simply said thing as they were. But, irrespective of the length of the book, it will be a book that I will ponder on some more over the next few weeks and months. Maybe even longer. It will also be a book that I will probably keep near to me, on my nightstand, so that I can revisit it at times, just to remember. My thanks go to the Publisher and Netgalley for the chance to read this book.
