An excellent book for someone who is interested in the symbolism behind Freemasonry. It is not a book for the novice student. In order to understand and appreciate the contents you would need some background information on the subject, including some psychology and some history.
The introduction starts with ... "This book has a very particular orientation toward Freemasonry. It interprets the Craft as a `God-centered psychology'." As the author explains, these terms require further explanation, which you can read about in the book.I am not a Mason, but have traveled other spiritual paths, each reinforcing within me the realization that the essence of each path shines forth the same light. The author writes about this same recognition within the realm of Freemasonry.I have found at the heart of each spiritual path, practices to help the seeker recognize the reality of who we are and our relationship to the universe. The author writes about this practice within the realm of Freemasonry.In other traditions, this learning and practice is referred to as the Great Work, or Inner Work. In what the author writes, he seems to indicate that this Inner Work may be practiced within at least some contemporary Freemason Lodges. I sincerely hope so, as it has sparked my continued investigation of Freemasonry as a path for Spiritual Development.Much of the book is devoted to introducing concepts and symbols involved in the Freemason's three degrees. I will need to contemplate on these sections much more, perhaps someday with the help of those within a Lodge.To those that find interest in what I have written, I highly recommend the book.

Then, MacNulty shifts paradigms to that of a framework for Masonic understanding and development based upon the psychoanalytic theories of Freud and Jung. Respectively, Freud's model of the personality based upon the id - instinct, ego - rationality and super-ego - conscience; and, Jung's archetypes, a collective and inherited unconscious unifying dreams, images and ritual! The infinite explanatory power of psychoanalytic theory, and its immunity from refutation, provides enviable scope for the author's creativity, but may be unnecessary for those who do not require a deux ex machina model. Each Mason is free to choose those personal developmental frameworks that for him make sense, sustain and are sustainable. The frequent use of the term "Masonic labour" further makes clear that the Masonic temple allegory is founded upon the necessity and reality of material production, and also upon the rationality and responsibility for its appropriate distribution.
